Residuals Treatment Facility
Project Name: Residuals Treatment Facility
Construction: 2018-2021
Design Engineer: Mott MacDonald
Contractor: Coppola
Location: Pequannock Water Treatment Plant
Cost: Over $ 5,000,000
Project Summary: The City of Newark owns and operates a filter plant located in West Milford, the Pequannock Water Treatment Plant. These filters must be backwashed periodically which produces waste called sludge. Since the Pequannock WTP has come online around 1990 the sludge was being pumped to the “sludge lagoon”. The Residuals Treatment Facility was constructed to treat the sludge by separating it into water and a dry cake waste. The water is then recycled back into the process and the dry cake is hauled away via dumpster. The Residuals Treatment Facility gives the City the ability to decommission the sludge lagoon providing compliance and aesthetic value while increasing the efficiency of the water treatment process.
